Cultural Walk on Country

Recently, Guma-Warnii, one of our Pilbara Aboriginal Businesses (PAB’s), invited members from Rio Tinto Projects and the Calibre senior leadership team to spend time in the Robe Valley and experience a cultural walk on Country. Guma-Warnii (which translates to ‘coming together’ in the Robe River Kuruma dialect) provide a number of design and construction services, escort, and specialty cultural services to our RVS project.

Prior to the cultural walk, we toured Mesa A and Mesa J with one of the Guma-Warnii directors, Michael Venables, and discussed the important role PAB’s play by acting as a ‘bridge’ between the construction industry and traditional ways of life, before enjoying an evening with the wider Guma-Warnii team.

The cultural walk was led by Guma-Warnii director and senior elder, Elaine James – an inspiring Kuruma woman who narrated stories describing the importance of the two ethnographic sites we visited and the connection of the Kuruma Traditional Custodians to Country, stopping frequently as we made our way along the Robe River to learn about traditional medicines, food and water sources.

We also learnt about some traditional artefacts and the importance of native plants and bush foods to Aboriginal people thanks to Guma-Warnii employee Dean Uren, who is passionate about learning the craft of traditional tool and spear making, with some of his work on display.

Overall, the trip was an amazing experience and a great opportunity to build deeper relationships with Guma-Warnii and gain an increased understanding of the Kuruma Traditional Custodians connection to country.

We are incredibly proud to have supported our partners at ESM Resources Pty Ltd in their recent Variety WA Christmas Toy Appeal. Thanks to the generosity of everyone involved, ESM raised an amazing $7,219.00 worth of Christmas gifts, all going to children who are sick, disadvantaged, or living with disability. Every child deserves the chance to feel the magic of Christmas, and we’re grateful to have played a small part in helping make that happen. A huge thank you to ESM for driving such an impactful initiative.

We are incredibly grateful to have supported this year’s Pannawonica Pythons charity match. With a huge community turnout, four former AFL players on the field, and a hard-fought contest from start to finish, it was a weekend to remember. But above all, the real highlight was rallying together for three important causes: Movember, the Black Dog Institute, and Selwood charities. Every cheer, every volunteer, and every dollar raised will help support mental health, wellbeing, and families doing it tough. We couldn’t be prouder to stand alongside the Pythons and the Pannawonica community to back organisations that make such a meaningful difference.

At Guma-Warnii, we believe in supporting the next generation of Indigenous talent. That's why we were incredibly proud to sponsor the SouthSide Suns football team at the 25th Annual Syd Jackson GWABA Bunbury Carnival! It was inspiring to witness this young team, many of them first-time competitors show immense spirit and determination while competing against the region's best. This partnership is one we value deeply, and we look forward to continuing this journey with the SouthSide Suns in the seasons to come. A huge congratulations to the players, coaches, and the team behind the scenes—especially Allurah for designing the amazing footy jumper!
